With a Tweet on Valentine’s day Eve, a Nigerian boyfriend shares how he had travelled 23 long hours from Lagos to Kebbi just to propose to his girlfriend.
Pulse Weddings reached out to him and he tells us the whole, remarkable story below:
I drove all night…
Undeterred by long distance and an inability to purchase a flight ticket, Roland pockets the sparkling new ring he’d purchased and hits the road to Kebbi with other commuters, risking the long, worn-out roads and their hazards, just to go propose to Modupeola, his sweetheart who is a serving corp member several miles away in Zuru Local Government, Kebbi state.
After 23 hours of the gruelling, tiring journey, with the lover boy just on the cusp of seeing the woman of his dreams, nerves set in and he takes to Twitter to seek the calming reassurance users of the app sometimes give.
“23 hours on the road from Lagos to Kebbi to ask just one simple question.” His tweet read.
“She’s not aware I’m [on] the same street with her this midnight… seriously nervous.
“[Boost] my morale, guys…” he pleads in the tweet which would go viral for the genuine romance it spoke of and the appealing beauty of his bold move.
Afterall, it was Valentine’s and this was the kind of stuff the season was about.
Besides, everyone needs reassurance sometimes and here was a guy with his heart on his sleeves, doing the kind of romantic stuff movies are made of… the very thing Celine Dion sang about in her hit 2003 single, ‘I drove all night.’
So Twitter comes through with the support and words of encouragement and off goes the Prince to propose to his Queen-in-waiting.
Roland and Modupeola had met in Abeokuta three years ago while she was still a student there and they have grown so intimate and become deeply bound in new levels of love from then up till now.
“We met in Abeokuta during her ND days. We have known each for three years” he says.
The three years have been non-stop bliss for the Prince and he says he gets a feeling of “respect” and so much more from her to know that it was time to put a ring on it.
The surprise proposal
Because Roland arrived in Zuru, Kebbi in the middle of the night, he had to propose the next day.
So he spent the night with friends and fellow corpers on ground, who had provided emotional logistics, assistance and moral support in planning the surprise.
“[I was] just few houses away from her and she never knew I was in kebbi” he tells Pulse Weddings.
“I had the best planners… Her roommates helped plan the whole thing.”
And they made an ingenious beauty of it!
Modupe’s friends had schemed to have her go with them to the only eatery in Zuru so that the beautiful proposal would then be unraveled.
“The proposal happened at the only eatery in Zuru,” Roland recounts to Pulse Weddings.
“They (her and friends) were there to meet the supposed BF of one of her friends.
“While they were waiting I walked in and sat beside her.. I was feeling her shaking over like she saw a ghost!”
As if the surprise of seeing her boyfriend was not enough, moments later when the food was served, Modupe would discover one more breathtaking surprise!
“Food was served, and her plate had [only] the ring box in it.
“There was no food in Her plate only the ring box…. she opened it and started shaking.
”Finally, she said yes!” Roland excitedly narrates.
The lover boy so far takes the lead in the race for the most amazing boyfriend on Valentine’s day 2018 because, frankly, if this isn’t some sweet, sweet Valentine’s story, we don’t know what is!
Congratulations to Roland and Modupeola from Pulse Weddings!
